The SU2 (Stanford University Unstructured) suite is an open-source collection of C++ based software tools to perform PDE analysis and solve PDE-constrained optimization problems on unstructured grids.

SU2 is under active development at Stanford University in the Aerospace Design Lab (ADL) of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

SU2 is now being used to analyze and design flows in incompressible settings (mechanical and industrial engineering), renewable energy applications (wind turbines and solar collectors), naval engineering (free surface flows), and even chemical engineering, to name a few.

While the framework is general and meant to be extensible to arbitrary sets of governing equations for solving multi-physics problems, the core of the suite is a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver capable of simulating the compressible, turbulent flows that are characteristic of typical problems in aerospace engineering,

SU2 is an aerodynamics oriented, advanced, flexible, open-source tool that can be used for:

High-Fidelity Analysis

  1. Able to handle internal and external flows.
  2. Works on arbitrary unstructured grids and includes a Pointwise plugin for mesh generation.
  3. Euler, Navier-Stokes, RANS, rotating frame, axisymmetric and incompressible equations.
  4. Steady and time-accurate analyses.
  5. Implicit solver with advanced (multigrid and others) convergence acceleration techniques.

Shape Optimization

  • Self-contained optimization env.
  • Gradient computation using adjoint approach.
  • 3D design variable definition and built-in geometry and mesh deformation.

Multi‐Physics Simulations

  • Simultaneous analysis of different equation sets with tight coupling.
  • Free surface simulations, noise, fluid structure, etc.
  • Multi-species plasma solver for simulating ionized flows.
